Research Facts
Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; gold is still used by some dentists, despite it being more costly and more difficult to work with than amalgams or composites; gold was first used to fill cavities around 1500 C.E. in early modern Italy; while gold is a very soft metal, it becomes harder when compressed, and pieces weld together in the mouth; it requires twice as much force as amalgam does to be compressed, however, and there is a danger of hurting the tooth being filled; mat gold are clumps of gold, as opposed to thin foil sheets or powdered gold

Research Facts
Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; dental silver is used in the creation of amalgam fillings, which consist of 40-50% liquid mercury mixed with one or more metals; amalgams were first used in France in the early 19th century, but the modern 'recipe' was perfected by Dr. G. V. Black in the 1890s in Chicago; the metal usually contains a high percentage of silver (around 70%) and a mix of tin, copper and zinc; high copper amalgams are also available, where the silver content is much lower (as low as 40%) and the copper much more prevalent

Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; Darkie toothpaste was sold only in Asia; the brand was acquired by Colgate in 1985, after which a controversy grew in the US out of the fact that the name 'Darkie', offensive to many, was not changed right away; it wasn't until 1989 that the name changed to 'Darlie', however some pointed out that the Chinese name was not changed, and remained racist in its language
