Research Facts
In the first Coolidge tube, P/electrons were emitted from a tungsten wire filament that was itself the cathode. Named for H.D. Coolidge. The glass protrusions contain activating or regenerating devices that cause occluded gases to be liberated, thereby producing more potential electrons and softening the resultant X-ray emission. The cathode is "cupped," causing the electron beam to be focused on the target material.

X-Ray tube (a); at one end is a series of radiator fins at right angles to the tube and spaced at regular intervals around the tube; above the fins is a cylindrical section of hard plastic, followed by a chrome-plated (?) section; in the middle of this section is a raised piece of metal whose outer circumference is threaded; this piece has openings at both ends, and at the base is a thickish glass window; on the opposite side of the centre piece is a metal plate with maker's information; beyond the centre piece is another plastic section that meets with a metal cap at the end; in the middle of the flat-topped cap is a fuse-like object that extends outward (lengthwise) from the middle; tube sits on a wooden mount (b).
