Paine's Celery Compound first made in 1872; very popular in the 1890's; bottle likely made between 1860 and 1880.
Contained 21% alcohol, also found in the U.S. (bottle Burlington, VT.), Wells & Richardson bought formula from Mrs. Paine, a Burlington, VT. widow; with natural ingredients of "celery extract, hops and coca" -- combination of cocaine and alcohol; Samuel Hopkins Adams put Paine's in the category of The Bracers (alcoholic stimulants)
