Research Facts
Yasmin has been available in Canada since 2005. It contains a type of progestin called drospirenone which can reduce symptoms of PMS including water retention, and improve some types of acne. Drospirenone may be associated with a higher risk of fatal blood clots than other types of hormonal birth control. Class-action lawsuits against Yasmin and similar product Yaz have been initiated in nine provinces between 2009 and 2013, with one in Ontario certified by a judge to proceed in April 2013.
