Lid with one side flat; minor surfacr rust inside lid; three dents on base; three spots where finish is missing
Designed to heat an opium pipe and bowl to vaporize the opium so that it could be inhaled. Production lessened in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries because of opium eradication campaigns, and then stopped in China after the Communist Revolution in 1949. Production continued on a small scale in parts of Asia until the 1960s.
Was used in an exhibit for the International Congress of the History of Medicine in Montreal; used by the North American Indians; note: crude drugs were used in Canada quite extensively until around the 1920s; habitat for Phytolacia americana: moist soils in Eastern and Central U.S.A.; parts used: berries, root; uses: Pamunkey tribe of Virginia used it for rheumatism; also for relief of pain and inflammation; current use is as molluscicadal agent; official preparation (root): U.S.P. 1820-1916.
