Bigelow's evacuation apparatus, which consists of an oval orange rubber bulb with three openings, to which three metal pieces are attached; two pieces have stopcocks and are open-ended; the other has a clear, round glass bulb attached; one stopcock attachment ends with a convex piece; a metal band connects the other stopcock piece with the glass bulb piece.
The number "40" is stamped into the metal in several places; "G.U. MAN CO // LONDON" is stamped into the metal band.

Condition Remarks
The rubber at the metal attachment points was significantly stressed and cracked; there was no sign of metal corrosion, the glass had no chips or breaks, and the rubber was still flexible; pieces that could once be removed could be no longer, due to the rubber deterioration; #2: rubber ripped close to metal attachment, glass vial, steel; #3: rubber requires special trateatment.

Condition Remarks
Both infusion bottles have water trapped inside; black rubber stoppers have disintegrated somewhat,
leaving black specks floating in the water; pale grime also on inside walls of bottles; latex tubing
(all three) is disintegrating wherever it is stretched over attachments; catheter, with homemade
balloon, is in good condition; lever action still good on all stopcocks; transducers have
pieces of tape wrapped around each; yellow stains on transducer marked "Bladder" in stopcock mechanism
and where it attaches to catheter guide; plug marked "P4" has sticky (tape?) residue on rubber
section; each plug has a piece of masking tape attached; tape is dry but not yet pulling away; #2: rubber is cracked and stuck to glass; glass is dirty; #3: lots of rubber requiring special treatment; unidentified residue inside bottles.

they were filled with water and attached to the wall (see attached drawing); balloon catheter made
by Gill Major, Dr. Low's nurse, of penrose drain and black silk thread; had to be made under water

This artefact is part of a set of surgical instruments belonging to Dr. Weston L. Herriman, who was one of the first nine students who graduated in 1855 from the newly formed School of Medicine at the Church of Scotland-affiliated University of
Queen's College (1854, Kingston, Ont.). The nine senior students had transferred from the Anglican Upper Canada School of Medicine (Toronto) to the new school at Queen's.

C-shaped clamp with a screw attachment and a bent piece of metal at 90 deg angle; the screw attachment moves the bent piece of metal up to the top of the C-shaped piece which allows a catheter to be clamped between them
Catheter guide consists of a heavy-gauge steel wire, bent into a roughly pentagonal shape at one end for a handle; curved at the other end with a rounded tip; has been bent again above the handle
Wire stylet, straight, smooth, flexible fine wire with a loop at one end; fits inside a sleeve.
