Leather is deteriorating, especially on corners; a piece of leather has ripped and is hinged on top part of spine; spine has detached completely; pages are discoloured; dark spots and edges present on inside cover and first four pages; scratches all over spine and front and back cover; pages xvii, xviii and 1 have detached from spine and are loose in book

Richard Quain was born in 1816 and died in 1898; best remembered for editing A Dictionary of Medicine; honours accorded to Quain were election as an FRS in 1871, appointment as Physician-Extraordinary to the Queen in 1890, and the grant of a baronetcy in 1891
