Research Facts
Angada Children's Hospital opened in 1953. The hospital chose the name 'Angada' - an Arabic word meaning "to bring help unto you" - in recognition of the support of the main fundraising group, the Shriners Club in 1938. The Doran Wing at the east end of the Kingston General Hospital was renovated and expanded in 1953 for the Angada Hospital, which was the only children's hospital between Toronto and Montreal. Four floors provided 82 beds and treatment centres for infants to teenagers. Closures started with Angada 4 in 1972, Angada 3 in 1973. In 1977 the Paediatric Ward at Hotel Dieu is closed and consolidated at KGH until 1984 when it is reversed and the Angada Hospital is renovated as the Syl and Molly Apps Medical Research Centre and is the home for the Human Mobility Research Centre since 1987.
