Description
Dental bur holder is made of white porcelain and is cylindrical in shape; the sides of the holder are raised slightly higher than the centre portion; there are three semi-circular grooves placed equally around the outside of the holder that extend from the bottom of the holder to just below the rim of the top; there are holes that are pierced in the top of the rim of the holder, with three sets of thirteen holes; the lower central portion of the holder also is pierced with holes arranged circularly in the holder; there are five holes that surround the metal handle that is located in the middle of the holder; these holes peirce the enter depth of the holder and are larger then the other holes; the silver metal handle has a slightly rounded top, and is fastened to the holder by way of a screw in the base.

Shows signs of wear; porcelain finish is discoloured; there are numerous chips around the bottom and the semi-circular indents in the side of the holder; there are cracks along the top rim; the metal handle leans to one side and is tarnished and discoloured.

Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; a matrix band, consisting of a small, thin sheet of metal, was held tight alongside the tooth being filled to provide a smooth, curved wall against which the filling could be packed; a retainer was used to hold it in place; this model featured pointed knobs on its end, which could attach securely to the matrix, ensuring it would not become disengaged
