Research Facts
Mentioned in the article as present at the ceremony is Lady Byng of Vimy, who was the wife of Governor General Julian Byng, who became Governor General in 1921. She had a fondness for Canada and enjoyed watching hockey games; the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in hockey is named for her. While her husband was overseas during World War I, she converted their home into a 30-bed hospital for wounded soldiers in 1914. She was popular in Canada, spoke French, and enjoyed sharing in her husband's responsibilities as Governor General.
The first official graduating class of the Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing was in 1888; the school was created in order to educate nurses as the demand for them increased, as well as providing a labour force to the hospital. When the first nurses graduated, they were given a certificate of completion, twenty five dollars, and a nursing medal. Over the years, nurses were sometimes given pins and/or rings or other memorabilia to commemorate their graduation from the school.
