Zimmer began Zimmer Manufacturing Company in Warsaw Indiana in 1927; the Zimmer line of 50 aluminum splints debuts at the American Medical Association meeting in May of 1927 in Washington, D.C. and the Zimmer splint becomes an immediate leader in its field; the colles splint is generally used for distal-end fractures of the ulna and radius; it can be fitted to the correct angle of flexion by slightly twisting and bending; handpiece is contoured to fit the hand

(a) Metal scope is a hollow cylinder open at both ends; one end flares out into a lip, which tapers into a short series of threads; because the threaded (grooved) part is wider than the cylinder itself, this part slopes smoothly inwards to the opening; (b) the metal handle is essentially a thin tube with a flat, round corrugated disc on one end, and a bullte-shaped plug on the other; about one-third of the way down, the pipe widens into a long, circular flange, flat on the top and tapering into a round lip that encircles the pipe; this flange fits into the smooth inwardly sloping end of (a); when assembled, (b) fits into (a) and the plug and handle extend out from (a).
