Diagnostic kit, consisting of (a) a leather-covered, rectangular wooden case; the top is hinged at the back with two metal hinges; front has a simple latch with a circular button on the outside as part of the locking mechanism; inside top is satin and bottom is blue velvet over wood cut into holders for tools; (b) adjustable metal speculum; top is open; speculum is hollow; two blades, hinged and conical in shape, are adjusted by a metal screw mechanism that attaches to the top above the blade hinges by way of a metal collar; (c-e) conical, hollow, metal speculum, with a short neck extended past flare of collar; bottom tip is open, allowing sight down inside length of speculum; (f,g) circular metal mirror, attached to a thin, cylindrical metal arm and hollow cylindrical collar; (h) cylindrical light; top has glass and is convex; bottom is metal threaded with copper connector; (i) otoscope assembly: main body is a metal cylinder; one side has a lens with a concave, terraced eyepiece; minor cylinder projects from eyepiece; small glass ring projects down from cylinder in a flexible mounting; longer cylinder projects down from main piece; two engraved rings, two smaller cylinders; cylinder back is open with a light similar to (h); (j) ophthalmoscope port: rectangular, made of metal, with a cylinder mounted on top and folded over the bottom; bent metal creates a slot; (k) solid, metal depressor, consisting of a hollow cylinder attached along the bottom to a longer V-shaped piece of flat metal, the top 0.8 cm and curving down, with a blunt convex tip; (l) ophthalmoscope head: the body is composed of a rotating disc of metal, with small, circular glass lenses embedded in the disc, sandwiched between two thin discs of metal, pierced with a circular hole to allow sight through the object; the front plate has both sides cut back to allow easier turning of the embedded disc; the rear plate has an extra semicircle of metal attached to the top; a small strip of metal is attached to the back of the back plate with two screws; it runs in parallel with a metal cylinder, the bottom having a neck, then terracing twice into a single prong--to anchor to the rest of the ophthalmoscope--while the top is cut diagonally at a 60° angle and filled with a glass lens; (m) illuminator, which is a long, curved cylinder of metal with a light at one end and a single prong connection at the other; (n) battery handle, which is a hollow cylinder of leather-covered metal; threading at bottom, closing mechanism missing; top has intact metal assembly with a clip extending down one side of cylinder; above the clip, the metal cylinder is cross-hatched for grip; top of cylinder has semicircular slot and a plastic tab extending from it; centre of top has smaller, cylindrical female single-prong plug with screw for securing connection.

(a) While structurally intact, the case leather is wearing away from the wood; hinges suffering from inactive corrosion; one hinge is broken; inside, satin is stained and velvet has sustained significant fungus and insect damage; (b) some wear on metal but is still functional; (c-e) some tarnishing around base; (f,g) some wear; mirrors clean; (h) wear and discolouration near plug end; (i) eyepiece intact but worn; tarnished on inside of cylinder; (j) plate is slightly worn; (k) wear on blade; some tarnish on underside; (l) slight inactive corrosion on top rim; wear on front face; rotary mechanism still functional; (m) adhesive debris stuck to arm; wear along length; significant wear two cm back from light tip; (n) leather cover peeling; inactive corrosion throughout inside; threading broken and cracked; bottom of handle missing; #2: box: dirty overall; losses to covering, especially at edges and corners; coveirng lifting at both back corners and along bottom edges; satin lining stained and worn with tide-lines and discolouration of fabric; velvet lining very dusty with major loss around the narrow end of one of the depressions on PR; pin on hinge on PR partially removed from barrel and is very rusty; pin on hinge of PL is missing; implements: minor surface dirt and accretions; major corrosion on interior of (n) with resulting loss of surface coating; screw-on end of this tool part has major losses.
