Made from petroleum, it can be of various thickness, however it is most commonly a jelly like-substance used in lip balms, moisturizers, hair products etc. It is used to lock moisture in the skin and hair. It is not a health hazard at the amount being used currently; only very refined versions are sold in Canada.

Used in the form of ointment, it was applied 2-3 times a day. It was used for impetigo, psoriasis, minor skin infections, bacterial infections, and anti-septic. It was found to be a poison that can cause chronic mercury intoxication, so it was discontinued as a medicine.

It was used to treat eczema, psoriasis, and sometimes due to its stiffness, the paste was used to fix other medication to the skin. It can produce irritation, black tint, and was odorous.
