Research Facts
Ellan A. (Anderson) McKenzie (1908-1988) Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1930 worked for the Department of Indian Affairs, at several Indian Reserves near Pine Falls, Manitoba: Roseau River Reserve, Brokenhead Reserve, Fort Alexander Reserve, Sioux Lookout and other mining and lumber towns. After WWII she worked in Ottawa with the Civil Service.
The photograph album covers a time frame of 1929 to 1936. Earlier photos relate to nursing school days showing fellow nursing students. Another section covers Reserve Hospital in Saskatchewan. Throughout the album are family photos. The last section of the album relates to Ellen’s employment at the Fort Alexander Reserve in Manitoba. When Ellen married Alexander McKenzie on October 19, 1935, she had to resign from nursing as the policy of the day was that only unmarried women could nurse. Her husband, Alexander (University of Toronto Forestry Class of 1924) worked in Pine Falls with the Abitibi Paper Company as a ‘timber cruisier’, created maps of the area before being promoted to a management position.
Ellen worked at the File Hills Colony Hospital in Lorlie, Saskatchewan in 1932, a demonstration community set up by the Indian Department on the Peepeekisis Reserve around 1900-1932. The colony was designed to train graduates from Indian Residential School in farming and community development skills. As an experiment, it was deemed a success in its day, but is now thought of as an exercise in social engineering given that its long term goal was assimilation. The hospital opened in 1915 and was declared a fire hazard by the deputy superintendent in 1933. It was more of a dispensary with most of its patients treated as outpatients.
Ellen traveled to other areas by dogsled, wagon and on one occasion by airplane. She also worked at the Dynevor Hospital, Selkirk, Manitoba;
