Research Facts
The main building at Kingston General Hospital was built in 1833-1835 as a charitable hospital. It did not open as a public hospital until 1845, as it was the first home of the Canadian Parliament after the union of Upper and Lower Canada from 1841-1844. The first graduating class of the Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing was in 1888; the school was created in order to educate nurses as the demand for them increased, as well as providing a labour force to the hospital. When the first nurses graduated, they were given a certificate of completion, twenty five dollars, and a nursing medal.
In 1789, United States President George Washington created commemorative buttons to mark his election. These commemorative buttons were the first promotional items to be given away.
