Research Facts
Ethel Dowsley graduated in 1925.
The first graduating class of the Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing was in 1888; the school was created in order to educate nurses as the demand for them increased, as well as providing a labour force to the hospital. When the first nurses graduated, they were given a certificate of completion, twenty five dollars, and a nursing medal.

Doreen Appleton (maiden name) attended Queen's Nursing Science School from 1951-1952, Kingston General Hospital Nursing School from 1952-1955, and Queen's again from 1955-1956; she worked at Ongwanada Sanitarium in the summer of 1956, and at Public Health in Napanee and at schools etc. in the late 1950s; she worked part time during the 1960s at Kingston General Hospital and did not work from the late 1960s until 1977 when she returned part time to KGH; she also worked at the Fraser Armstrong Patient Center from 1979-1992, and at a doctor's office until she retired in 1996.

Research Facts
The first permanent Provincial Board of Health was created in the early 1880s. The Board worked to eradicate and control outbreaks of infectious diseases such as smallpox, typhus, typhoid, diphtheria and scarlet fever, as well as to ameliorate environmental abuses. It was granted partial departmental status in 1919 when it was allied with the Department of Labour. In 1924, health work receive full recognition with the establishment of a formal Department of Health for the province of Ontario. Between 1930 and 1935, hospitals and mental health services were added to its jurisdiction.
The envelope contained Valleau's notice of having successfully passed the exam for Nurse Registration (996028028)
