Research Facts
Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; this item was donated by Dr. William Mills from Etobicoke, Ontario; this type of anaesthesia would be used on patients who were needle-phobic, not able to have chemical anaesthetics, or did not want post-treatment numbness; electrodes were taped to the face, and the muscles were stimulated via a signal from the battery-operated unit; the patient themselves controlled the level of stimulation; one study, presented at the 2001 meeting of the American Public Health Association, found that a majority of patients found electronic anaesthesia to be acceptable; it also states that 3M's product was pulled from the market, however, because the marketability wasn't there
