Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; Clev-Dent was established in 1896; a matrix band, consisting of a small, thin sheet of metal, was held tight alongside the tooth being filled to provide a smooth, curved wall against which the filling could be packed

Description
Scalpel handle, which consists of a flat piece of steel that is rounded at one end and tapers to a long, thin, rounded tip; the round tip has an extremely thin slot that allows a scalpel blade to be inserted; midway down the handle on both sides, there are recessed troughs; towards the tip, there are seven horizontal grooves through these troughs which form a distinct grip.

The scalpel handle is marked in raised relief on both sides towards the blade slot in a recessed trough; on one side is marked "CRESCENT," and on the other is "FREMONT, O."; at the extreme end of the handle on each side, a maker's mark appears consisting of a crescent moon cupping a cross; in the centre of the handle, on one side only, "-" is stamped into a recessed circle
