Description
(a) Birkmire defibrillator built into a cloth-covered wooden case with a lid hinged by two hinges at the back and closed by two clasps at the front; between the two front clasps is a leather carrying handle (now broken off) and the bottom of the case has four round plastic feet to stand it up on; the inside lid of the case has a piece of paper with printed instructions; the inside right front of the case has a built-up rectangular-shaped powering unit; the top of this unit has power and impulse lights, an intensity bulb, an on/off switch and a push button; the back of the unit has two electrical cords coming out of it; one cord was to plug into an electrical supply; the other cord has an end which attaches to (b) two paddles, each attached to an electrical cord and joining together at a single plug; each paddle consists of a narrow rectangular bakelite handle onto which is attached a long cylindrical rubber-covered piece of metal; at the end of the metal rods, there is an attached piece of round flat metal which is covered at the front with cloth.

Condition Remarks
The defibrillator arrived very dirty and dusty; the case is in good repair with only one small tear in the cloth at the bottom; the leather handle is broken off; the cord leading to the electrical supply appears to be a replacement; the cloth covering the paddles is stained and one is torn; minor corrosion is visible on the front clasps; other parts of the defibrillator are complete and undamaged; #2: dusty; metal in good condition; scratches on sides; rubber gives off foul odour.

Description
A cardiac oscilloscope; consists of the main unit (a) which is a large machine made up of four large wheels at the bottom attached to two metal beams, one on each side; the beams are connected by a cabinet made of black metal, and wood, there is a drawer at the bottom that opens on the back of the machine (b) mid way up the machine in the front is a large box which opens with an opening lid; inside is a brass plate and gear for printing; the top portion of the machine has seven panels with knobs and buttons on them; there is one for pulse, two for heart sound, two for ecg, one for system control, an d one echo adapter, there is a door on the back where the back of these panels can be accessed, and things can be plugged into them; there are also three electronic boxes which connect to the backs of the panels via cords; these are an echo preamplifier (c), and two ECG preamplifiers (d,e); each preamplifier has five sockets for electrode cords of different colours; there are two sets of electrode cords, two white (f,g) for the right arm, two black, (h,i) for the left arm, two red (j,k) for the left leg, two green (l,m) for the right leg, and two brown, (n.o) for the chest; there is a splitter box (p) which is a small grey metal box with sockets for connecting cords; there are four cords, the first (q) is grey and straight; the other three are coiled, one has red ends (r); the other two have silver metal ends and are identical (s,t); there is an electronic stethoscope (u), which looks like a regular stethoscope only instead of a chest piece it has a plug which hooks into a socket on the heart sound panel; there is another cord with an unknown function (v); it has a plug at one end, and a white and red plastic end; there is a cadet switch (w), which is a foot peddle which plugs into the back of the machine; there is a cord with a large box as its plug with a switch and a socket for another plug, the other end of the cord has a plastic white circle with velcro on the bottom; there are also two heart sound microphones (y,z), which are metal cylinders with amber coloured rubber tubes extending out of them and a cord which plugs into the machine; and an external pulse transducer (aa), which looks just like the microphones except the tube extends from the bottom of the cylinder instead of the side; there is also a video monitor (ab) which sits on the top of the machine; the monitor is a black metal box with a screen on the front with silver metal arms acting as a stand; at the bottom of the stand is a screw with a black handle which screws into a hole on the top of the larger machine.

Dr. Menachem Wurzel
Research Facts
Dr. Wurzel graduated with a medical degree in 1948 from Hungary, and emigrated to Jerusalem and got an M.A. in mathematics and physics; he emigrated to Canada in 1965 and became Associate Professor of Physiology at the University of Ottawa; in 1972 he received his license to practice medicine in Canada, and practiced in Ottawa and Hull; in 1974 he attempted to get his license to practice cardiology, and passed his written test but not his oral; he practiced cardiology anyway after being told to say that his oral exam was "missing"; this unit and all its pieces cost $37,000 in 1975.
