(a) Front: "50 CC. SIZE FOR INTRAVENOUS USE No. 206 // GLASEPTIC AMPOULE // SOLUTION SODIUM CITRATE // 2 1/2 PER CENT. FOR BLOOD TRANSFUSION. // Each ampoule contains 55 cc. of solution – sufficient excess for washing out all tubing and needles used. // PARKE, DAVIS & COMPANY"; front: "INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE // Apply a tourniquet to the donor's arm and puncture one of the larger veins in the elbow region (usually the median cephalic vein). Use a cannula of // large dimensions in order that the blood may flow rapidly through the needle. Collect the blood in a graduated glass jar in which has already been placed // the Sodium Citrate Solution. If 450 cc. of blood is to be transfused, use 50 cc. of the Citrate Solution so that the blood to be administered to the patient will // thus contain 0.25% of Sodium Citrate. If larger or smaller amounts of blood are to be transfused, use larger or smaller amounts of the Citrate Solution in // proportion. // Apply a tourniquet to the recipient's arm; puncture the vein with a cannula directly – though it may be necessary to expose the vein by a small incision. // (Continued on opposite side of box)"; back: "(Continued from opposite side of box.) // Remove the tourniquet and attach the transfusion apparatus, which contains from 20 to 30 cc. of physiologic sodium chloride solution. The blood is // then poured into this apparatus and allowed to run into the punctured vein by gravitation. To obtain the best results, the following precautions should be // borne in mind: // A Wassermann test must be made of every donor, particularly professionals. // The blood of the donor and that of the recipient must be tested, in order to prevent hemolysis and agglutination. // Donors should not serve a second time for the same patient without another test as to hemolysis and agglutination. // The blood relatives (parents, children, brothers, etc.) should be tested just as thoroughly as that of strangers, as their blood is often incompatible, // notwithstanding their near relationship"; bottom: "PARKE, DAVIS & COMPANY // LABORATORIES: // [9 cities listed] // BRANCHES AND DEPOTS: // [20 cities listed] // Printed by Parke, Davis & Co., Detroit, Mich."; right side: logo, see sketch on accession sheet; left side: identical to right side; (b) "GLASEPTIC AMPOULE // No. 206 // (FOR INTRAVENOUS USE) // 50 CC. SIZE // SOLUTION SODIUM // CITRATE // 2 1/2 PER CENT. // For use in blood transfusion // FOR DIRECTIONS SEE CARTON [printed] // c735293 [stamped] // PARKE, DAVIS & CO. // WALKERVILLE, ONTARIO"
