The Frosst Dingbat Calendars. Niagara Apothecary
Donor’s remarks
Research Facts
From 1915 until 1996, health professionals all across Canada received a calendar which featured the healing efforts of the Dingbats. Charles Edward Frosst founded the Canadian company that bore his name until 1965 when it was taken over by a major American manufacturer to become Merck-Frosst. Charles Frosst engaged the artist, William Dudley Burnett Ward, to paint an appealing calendar for distribution to his firm's audience. Over the course of 81 years there have been a long succession of artists following Ward.
The Dingbat calendars were discontinued as a result of a Canadian industry's association decision that the Dingbat promotion was unfair competition.
Gladys (Millar) Rockel graduated from Kitchener Waterloo Nursing College Class of 1939; nursing positions on Pontiac, MI (1940), Grand Rapids, MI (1941), Toronto, Ontario (1942) and worked in private practise with husband Dr Rockel.
The Dingbat calendars started in February each year leaving the last page for January of the following year still attached, so the actual calendar dates to the previous year.

Research Facts
The first official graduating class of the Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing was in 1888; the school was created in order to educate nurses as the demand for them increased, as well as providing a labour force to the hospital. When the first nurses graduated, they were given a certificate of completion, twenty five dollars, and a nursing medal. Over the years, nurses were sometimes given pins and/or rings or other memorabilia to commemorate their graduation from the school.

Research Facts
Garlic has been used for centuries for all sorts of cold and flu symptoms, as a natural antibiotic. Not only will garlic help boost your immunities, it is a drying herb and an expectorant, making it great for wet coughs that are producing a lot of phlegm.
Taking garlic pearls -- either as garlic cloves or supplements -- offers several potential health benefits. Garlic pearls may be odorless. A garlic pearl refers to a single clove of garlic, but in supplements, a pearl usually means a round or elongated, gelatin-covered capsule.

Research Facts
Five other exams are included in the Valleau Collection. The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, by 1935, was instrumental in developing standards for nursing education and practice. The association protected the title “registered nurse” by making it mandatory to be registered. Nurses had to graduate from nursing school and subsequently be examined again in order to become registered nurses in Ontario. Examinations for the Registered Nurse Certificate began in 1923.
