Battery testing thermometer, which consists of a closed, hollow glass tube with one rounded, blunt end and one tapered, metal-capped tip; the metal point is rounded and cylindrical; inside the tube, there is a folded paper insert with two vertical numerical scales, one red and one black; inside the tube above the metal tip there are numerous small, black beads; above the beads there is a thick, red substance; emerging from the centre of this substance is a yellow glass rod that extends down the centre of the tube along the scale, ending at a rounded tip 1.2 cm below the rounded end of the glass tube.

This artefact is part of a set of surgical instruments belonging to Dr. Weston L. Herriman, who was one of the first nine students who graduated in 1855 from the newly formed School of Medicine at the Church of Scotland-affiliated University of
Queen's College (1854, Kingston, Ont.). The nine senior students had transferred from the Anglican Upper Canada School of Medicine (Toronto) to the new school at Queen's.
