Research Facts
This hearing aid is a behind-the-ear hearing aid, with a piece that sits behind the ear (the hard plastic part) and a piece that connects from there and sits in the ear (the rubber piece). Today, the most commonly used types of hearing aids are Behind-the-Ear (BTE) , Receiver-In-Canal (RIC), In-the-Ear (ITE), and Invisible-in-Canal (IIC).
Early predecessors to hearing aids were ear trumpets; a horn in which the small end was placed in a person's ear and the large, bell end amplified sounds coming in.
Zinc Air batteries were introduced in 1977 and helped pave the way for greater sales of In-the-Ear hearing aids, as they were smaller batteries.
Throughout the 20th century, with the introduction of electrical hearing aids, new ways of concealing hearing aids were also introduced, including concealing the devices in purses and cases that were made to look like camera cases.
This hearing aid has a t-switch, which refers to a telecoil. A telecoil is a wire coiled around a rod inside the hearing aid, and it functions to pick up magnetic signals and bring them into the hearing aid as sound. This way, background noise can be cut out so the wearer can focus on the voice of someone speaking to them, music, a lecture, etc. This can be linked to existing sound systems in public places so that the sound is delivered directly to the hearing aids.

How successfully this // can be accomplished depends primarily // on the physician's knowledge and patient // rapport. The following dialogue extracted // from this recording illustrates a not un- // common situation in the medical practice // of today. // As a doctor, I have several problems where // sex is concerned, first of all, I am a man // and people expect me to know about sex. // Well don't men know all about sex? // Well, you see that's just the thing, men // talk about sex, and they tell dirty jokes and // they brag, but when it comes to really // knowing about sex and knowing about // sexual feelings and sex reactions, they are // at a distinct disadvantage because they // don't know about this. // Well if you don't know, why can't you ask? // Well I can't ask, because if I ask it means // I don't know, and if I don't know, it means // I am not a man. // That's an awful bind to be in, and our so- // ciety says to be a man you have to know all // about sex, so you couldn't admit it by // asking a question. // And well I've got another problem, I'm a // doctor. // That's a problem? // Sure that's a problem. You see everybody // expects me to be the world's greatest // expert, and really where do you think I // picked it up. When the other guys were at // college, they were at least getting sexual // experience when I had my head in my // books and my face in Gray's anatomy, and // you don't get much sex that way. // Well didn't they teach you about it at medi- // cal school? // I guess the urologist did, every time we // came to a genital area there was always // the urologist around with a dirty joke, // so I got the impression that sex was dirty. // That's all I heard at medical school. // So that didn't make you any more comfort- // able when talking about sex with patients. // No, now you see the problem I've got right // now. // Well, I can see where it would make you un- // comfortable. What could we do to im- // prove the comfort level of the physician so // he could then talk to the patients about // their problem? // Published as a service // to the medical profession by // Hoffmann-La Roche Limited // Vaudreuilm, Quebec // ® Reg.
