Research Facts
"An oleo-gum-resin obtained from the living rhizome and root of Ferula assafoetida . . . It is in the form of greyish-white or yellow tears with a garlic-like odour and a bitter acrid taste . . . been used as a carminative in the treatment of flatulence and as an expectorant in bronchitis. It was formerly used for its supposed effect in nervous disorders, but any effect it might have in these conditions is attributed to the psychological response to the objectionable odour and taste."

Research Facts
Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008.
A 1953 article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal states that Sedicin is sold by pharmacists without a prescription, and is advertised as a safe remedy for insomnia and nervousness; the author recommended the medication not be indiscrimately sold due to possible toxic effects, such as purpuric eruptions
