Research Facts
Psychiatry refers to the branch of medicine dealing with mental illness, including the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of various disorders; psychiatry differs from psychology and focuses on both the physical and mental aspects of mental illness; also involves the use of medication to treat disorders.
The Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing was one of the first apprenticeship-based nursing training programs in Canada; began in 1886 in response to the increased focus on patient care in hospitals and the medical field; the program was meant to produce an educated and dedicated work force of nurses while also providing an affordable labour force for the hospital through on the job student training; the Ann Baillie Building, current home of the Museum of Health Care at Kingston, originally served as a residence for the student nurses at KGH.

Research Facts
Patricia (Fowlie) Clark graduated from the Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1964.
The first official graduating class of the Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing was in 1888; the school was created in order to educate nurses as the demand for them increased, as well as providing a labour force to the hospital. When the first nurses graduated, they were given a certificate of completion, twenty five dollars, and a nursing medal. Over the years, nurses were sometimes given pins and/or rings or other memorabilia to commemorate their graduation from the school.
