#2: The bookends showed minor signs of wear in the form of small scratches, and slight wear in the top corners of both pieces; both bookends were dusty; the top proper right nail and bottom proper left nail holding the plaque to bookend (a) were missing; the bottom proper left nail was loose, and the plaque was loose as a result; the proper right screw at the base of bookend (a) had developed a green patina; this had occurred with the same screw on bookend (b); the sticker on the back of bookend (b) was torn; #3: nails loose.

This quilt was sent to Dr. Harvie in England during WW II by the Canadian Red Cross Women's Group of Midland, Ont.; the group did the quilting and embroidery; this was a knitting and sewing group formed to supply socks and pyjamas for overseas hospitals.

Belonged to donor's family (Barber & Brunke) and her parents used it for her and her brother in the 1930s. Her father constructed the rolling base to allow her mother to move it easily around the house. The Barbers and the Brunkes’ have lived in Kingston for a few generations.

Research Facts
John T. Underwood founded the Underwood Typewriter Company in 1895 with headquarters in New York City, New York. Underwood produced what is considered the first widely successful, modern manual typewriter. This typewriter model No. 6 was last issued in 1937. Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008. Original inventory #270.
