Description
Auvard's vaginal speculum, which consists of a single piece of metal formed into a straight shaft, rounded and closed at the front, hollow, and open at the back; the top of the shaft flares out to form a triangular shape with rounded edges; the top of the triangle bends at a 45° angle and forms a tongue-like piece with a rounded tip and upcurved sides; at the lower part of the shaft, near the end, is a weight; this weight has a spherical, oval shape and is open at the back; below the weight, the shaft flares out slightly and has rounded outer edges.

Research Facts
Isaac Harvey, Matthew Harvey's grandfather, emigrated from New Jersey in 1789 to St. Johns, Ont. His father, Matthew, inherited the family farm, and Matthew Jr. graduated from Buffalo in 1850 and Trinity College Medical School in 1851. He became a school inspector and was active in municipal politics. In 1870, he was Warden of Welland County.
