Description
The inhaler is a hollow, metal cylindrical instrument with two hollow metal tubes leading to two plastic anaesthetic delivery cups; at the bottom of the cylinder, there is a metal cap that was once removable; it has gripping lines stamped into the metal and two vertical rectangular slots on opposite ends of the diameter of the cap; the bottom of the cap is flat; a metal disk caps this cylinder; from the curved top of this disk, two hollow metal tubes extend, curving outwards slightly away from each other, and forwards; these tubes are each capped by a brown plastic applicator; each applicator has a rounded conical shape with a round hole at the top.

This anaesthetic inhaler was filled with cotton batting saturated with ether or chloroform; the anaesthetic was delivered to the patient by inserting the delivery cups into the nostrils. Dr. Williams identified this item as a "nasal douche."

On display at Hotel Dieu Hospital circa 1983-1993; the item was mounted on an acidic board with copper-covered wires to secure it.

Condition Remarks
a: brass shows discolouration overall; tarnish; active corrosion along base at large cut away opening for bunsen burner (8.5 cm.) and continues underneath; inside of stand shows white drip marks turned to light corrosion where bunsen burner was taped inside since 1984; bottom shows water stains and discolouration; b: (orientation: handle @ 12:00) at "10:00" is a large solid drip of what appears to be tan paint; will not come off; continues underneath on bottom; handle paint is flaking off around edges; d: blackened bottom bowl and heat has discoloured metal; rim to insert medicine has brown drip marks; surface pitting; some grime around rim; e: tape residue at beginning of curving support where identification tag was attached since 1984; surface pitting; inside of funnel shows staining and grime; outside rim has a crease the full length of funnel (3.0 cm.) Recommendations: clean brass; stop corrosion; place near dry area or possibly bag of silica gel near shelf; #2: condition largely unchanged; the patch of corrosion on the bottom rim of the stand (a) has not grown in size (8.5 cm x 1.0 cm); the patch that continues on the underside of the stand was 6.7 cm x 3.7 cm, approximately; the inhaler was dusty; there were loose particles of residue inside part (d); #3: metal is tarnished, wooden handles are dirty.

It is injected intravenously or intramuscularly. Used to treat: anxiety, muscle spasms, alcohol withdrawal, seizures, hallucinations, agitation Also used pre-operation to induce drowsiness, forgetfulness and decrease anxiety. From a class of drugs called benzodiazepines (which affect the central nervous system) it allows the brain to send inhibitory signals through the nerves to calm the body.
