Research Facts
Gerald William Lingen Nicholson (1902-1980) was a historian and Director of the Historical Section, Army Headquarters, and an author of several books and articles. Born in England, he came to Canada in 1919 and attended Queen's University and the University of Toronto. He served in the Second World War, and joined the Army's Historical Section in 1943. He was later put in positions of authority in the Army's historical section in both London, England and in Ottawa. He retired in 1961.

The Canadian Mother and Child was originally written by former Chief of the Child and Maternal Health Division of the Department of National Health and Welfare Dr. Ernest Couture in 1940; this fourth edition was completely revised under the supervision of Dr. Couture and specialists from each Canadian province; it was written to provide parents with general information to help care for infants at home and prepare parents for the day-to-day realities of parenting.
