Description
Glass lamp (a) has a roughly spherical-shaped body with a flat bottom and manufacture seams on both sides; it tapers to a short neck that becomes a short stem with leak-proof grindings; a metal screw-top wick holder with ribbed edges fits on the stem and provides a rigid fastening for the cotton wick that sticks up slightly from the holder opening; the bottom of the lamp is flat with edges that are concave before flaring outwards into the body of the lamp; a metal cap (b) is used for extinguishing the flame; it is cylindrical with a rounded top and hollow inside; the metal cap fits over the cork wick holder and neck of bottle; a small rubber O-shaped ring (c) is included; it has round sides and a circular hole punched in the middle

Research Facts
Formally known as the Eastern Hospital for the Insane; the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital opened in 1894; in 1903 the School of Nursing opened with one student who was given a two year course in nursing the mentally ill, this was one of Ontario’s first nursing programs to specialize in psychiatric care; early in the 20th Century, the population expanded to 800 patients with as many as 100 patients at work on the grounds daily, the facility had a bakery, farm, garden, and a variety of shops including a butcher, tailor and carpenter (non of which are operational today); systems of treatment used throughout the years consisted of hydrotherapy, electro - convulsive therapy and vocational therapy; in 2000 the hospital was officially transferred from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to the Royal Ottawa Heath Care Group.

Scanlan-Morris Co. (Madison, WI) was a name rooted in the tales of early-twentieth-century Madison industry. S. Gwyn Scanlan and Tom Morris formed a business partnership in 1904, and produced furniture and equipment for hospitals.
Gladys (Millar) Rockel graduated from Kitchener Waterloo Nursing College Class of 1939; nursing positions on Pontiac, MI (1940), Grand Rapids, MI (1941), Toronto, Ontario (1942) and worked in private practise with husband Dr Rockel.
