Back side of case has opened at join with wooden frame; stitching of leather cover is undone; opposite corner is much-abraded, revealing underlying wooden frame and cardboard; upper corners of lid are open, revealing metal corner support; interior lining is loose and worn in places; leather covering is slightly worn and abraded, particularly along hinge of lid; #2: Leather and rubber should be stored separately and receive special treatment; (ao) material feels slightly sticky, possibly starting to break down; (ax) substance in bottle has leaked and has stained the surrounding area.

Pontocaine Hydrochloride with Dextrose (tetracaine hydrochloride) is a local anaesthetic; blocks sodium ion channels in the central nervous system, which blocks nerve signals, producing a numbing effect injected into the epidural space of the spinal cord in the lower back.
Belonged to Dr. J. S. Chaikoff (1896-1988), born in the Ukraine, died in Toronto; graduated in medicine from University of Toronto in 1926; general practitioner, specialist in anaesthesia at Doctor's Hospital and Bethesda Hospital (now part of North York General Hospital); learned caudal anaesthesia from Hingson and Edwards in New York around 1942; practised it in Toronto from Feb. 1943; practised anaesthesia until 1968, when his deteriorating eyesight caused him to cease; practised from office at Bathurst / Dundas 1932-1958; practised from office at Bathurst / Lawrence 1958-1988; from 1940-44 he was senior attending anaesthetist, Mount Sinai Hospital. Bethesda Hospital was a 21-bed general hospital at Bathurst and Sheppard run by the Missionary and Health Society of Canada.
