Research Facts
Much the vogue in the 19th century, snuff--pulverized tobacco leaves--was frequently sold in plain bottles and then transferred to more decorative containers.
Dr. Benjamin Marshall of New York, first began marketed his product in the early 1830's.
Ads proclaimed it as a cure for "Nearly All Common Diseases of the Head, Except Wrong-Headedness." It was also said to cure throat and lung diseases.
Charles Bowen, of Montpelier, Vermont became the sole proprietor of the brand in about 1840.

Research Facts
"Catarrh" is a build-up of mucous in the nose and throat, often associated with the common cold. Dr. Kellogg invented a few medicines, and had a philosophy of health based on vegetarianism, exercise, water, sunlight, and cleaning out the bowels. He was also very interested in sexual health; he promoted abstinence and denounced masturbation. He is well known for being the inventor of corn flakes.
