Provenance
This was the certificate Dorothy (Tweddell) Grant received upon being certified as a registered nurse.
"Province of Ontario // This is to Certify that // Dorothy Tweddell // having duly complied with the provisions of the Act respecting // The Registration of Nurses and the regulation thereunder has this day been duly // registered in the Department of Health and while so registered // may be designated and use the title // Registered Nurse // Given under out hands and Seal of Office of the Minister of Health // at the City of Toronto in the Province of Ontario this third day of // March in the year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred and thirty seven" printed on the certificate; signed by the Minister of Health and the Inspector of Training Schools.
Dorothy Tweddell was a graduate of Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing in 1936.
The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, by 1935, was instrumental in developing standards for nursing education and practice. The association protected the title “registered nurse” by making it mandatory to be registered.
