Research Facts
The Nightingale Pledge was originally created by a committee chaired by Lystra Grette, an instructor of nursing at Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, and was first used by its graduating nursing class of 1893. The pledge is an adaptation of the Hippocratic oath taken by physicians. There is no evidence that Florence Nightingale had input or knowledge of its content; however it bears her name. Traditionally it is cited by nursing graduates during Honours or Pinning ceremonies and accomapnies the Candle lighting segment of the ceremony.
