Research Facts
Hannah McQueen, Class of 1928 Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing worked at the Kingston General Hospital; her daughter Kathryn Wirsig was also a nurse at the Kingston General Hospital.
The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 under the name "The American Society for the Control of Cancer." Their original goal was to educate the public and raise awareness of cancer. The sword of hope symbol, pictured on the cover of the book and which acts as the logo for the American Cancer Society, was designed by George E. Durant of Brooklyn, New York in 1928 for a poster contest. It symbolizes the crusading spirit of the movement and has a caduceus at the hilt, symbolizing the medical and scientific nature of the Society's work.
