Research Facts
Lillian (Killins) Hicks is listed under her married name.
Over 2,800 nurses served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during the First World War as Nursing Sisters, and were the first women in the Allied Forces to be fully enlisted and receive pay equal to men. They were nicknamed “bluebirds” because of their blue uniforms and white veils. The Nursing Sisters treated wounded and sick soldiers as well as convalescents, prisoners of war, and even some civilians.
