Rectangular metal dental sterilizer unit (a); yellow-enamelled sides and interior with black porcelain top and brown metal base; metal seam running down centre of back; silver metal sterilizer and lid, with metal lever beside it, at top right; lever and sterilizer lid are raised via ridged metal foot pedal at bottom right of unit; three grey-enamelled rectangular trays inside sterilizer, one with curved handles on either side (b) and perforated holes throughout bottom, one with solid curved hook at centre of back (c) and smaller perforated holes at bottom, one with hook at centre of back (d) and perforated holes on bottom and sides; silver metal nozzle at right side of unit with round black knob; black rubber electrical wire with metal end coming out back of unit from white metal hole; front of unit has rectangular door with round black knob, two metal hinges on left side and clasp closure; two decorative strips of silver metal at top and bottom of door; brown on/off switch on top of door; four brackets inside unit to hold shelves

Research Facts
Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; this item was donated by Dr. Terry Kearns from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario; this unit is almost identical to 010.020.027 a-g, from the 1940s and manufactured by the Wilmot Castle Company of Rochester, New York; sterilizer box is filled with water and instruments are boiled for no longer than ten minutes; foot pedal opens sterilizer and raises trays to avoid contaminating tray handles with hands
