Dental functional retruder; rectangular black paper box (a) with lid that opens at front; yellow paper lining inside, with white paper instructions printed with black ink, complete with photographs of the instrument in use, affixed inside lid; fabric tie on left to keep lid from falling backwards; retruder consists of black rubber chin strap (b), round in middle with tapering sides; five holes on each side; arrow embossed in middle; semi-circular silver metal chin rest (c) curved in middle with tapering sides; knob on each side goes into holes in chin strap to adjust size; silver metal measuring tool (d); two branches, ending in sharp points, held together at top via hinge; branches can be pulled apart or pushed together

Dr Ralph and Mrs Olga Crawford donated their extensive Canadian dental collection to the DCF to create the museum in 1997; further donations were received while Dr Crawford was Curator Emeritus at the Dental Canada Museum until its closure in 2008; this item was donated by Dr. William H. Mills from Toronto, Ontario; as per the instructions on the box, this item is an instrument used to obtain normal centric jaw relation; the dentist could then register the centric bite of the patient
