The Burroughs Wellcome & Co. was founded in 1880 by Silas Burroughs and Henry Wellcome who participated in the revolution of "compressed" medicines (or pills) that could be mass-produced. Wellcome put together a team of engineers to build a machine that could produce 600 compressed pills per minute. In 1884, Wellcome registered 'Tabloid' as a trademark to eliminate the competition and it became one of the most powerful brand names in business history. The word tabloid was coined by blending the words 'tablet' and 'alkaloid' to denote his firm's pills from the competition.
