Irene L. Beland was "a scholar, scientist, educator, author, and consultant" whose work encouraged problem-oriented and conceptual nursing education. Her work attempted to answer the question "why?" things are done or designed in a certain way, etc. She taught nursing in various places in the United States, and authored or co-authored four editions of "Clinical Nursing." She was a pioneer in graduate nursing education.
