Ohio adult anaesthesia ventilator, which consists of a square metal base with a cylindrical glass and metal attachment on top; the front of the base has 8 knobs for on/off, low pressure alarm, expiratory flow rate, inspiratory flow rate, expiratory time, manual inspiration, inspiratory pressure and inspiratory trigger effort; the back of the base has a metal attachment which allows the machine to be attached to a bar; there is also a metal piece onto which something can be screwed; the hollow glass cylinder on top has rubber bellows inside and a tidal volume scale on the front; the glass is protected by a wide metal screen and two vertical bars at the side; the top of the cylinder has a metal lid which is screwed into place with a bar on top and a scavenging valve at the back for expired air as well as a knob at the front to adjust tidal volume; there is a small cylindrical plastic hose at the top back right of the base.

The machine was inspected in 1978; Dr. Matthews dates it in the 1980's -- likely an early model; John Sikora dates the machine from 1970s-mid-1980s

AIRCO"; the knobs and buttons are all labelled; the front of the cylinder reads, "ADULT // VENTILATOR // C.C'S // [and has a numbered scale from 0 to 1400] Ohio"; the right side of the base has a label which identifies the last time the machine was serviced and calibrated: "FEB 13/84"; the back of the machine has a manufacturer's label which reads, "Ohio ® // ANESTHESIA // VENTILATOR // STOCK NUMBER // 309.0612.800 // SUPPLY PRESSURE // 40 TO 75 PSIG // SERIAL NUMBER // AAEF01202 // Ohio Medical Products // MADISON, WISCONSIN .53701 // A DIVISION OF AIRCO, INC // AIRCO ® // MADE IN U.S.A."; a service label (last dated on October 15/79) and inspection label (dated 1-10-78) are also on the back

Condition Remarks
The ventilator arrived very dirty and dusty; the sides and back of the base had sticky residue left from a pressure-sensitive tape; the metal shows no corrosion; the glass is not chipped, cracked or excessively worn; the plastic parts have no cracks or missing sections; the rubber around the lid shows small cracks; #2 no new damage

Research Facts
This machine was gas-driven; the plastic hose controlled the amount of pressure delivered to the patient; this was a low pressure sensor which would ring if the pressure fell; the scavenging valve took expired gases away from the O.R.; the tidal volume controlled the amount of air delivered to the patient's lungs (in c.c.'s); the ventilator was pneumatically-controlled and had ascending bellows; this wouldn't allow the operator to determine leaks; air from the bellows went to the patient
