The thermometer (a) is a long glass cylindrical tube that is rounded at both ends; the top has a closed glass ring and the ampoule-shaped bottom contains a blue-coloured indicator fluid; the front of the thermometer is numbered from 40 to 120 with numerals stamped into the glass; the thermometer case (b) is a long, hollow wooden tube that has one open end and one rounded end; the open end has a slightly smaller diameter to allow the lid to close over it; just below the open end, a narrow, decorative groove is etched into the circumference of the tube; the case lid (c) is a shorter hollow wooden tube that has one open end and one rounded end; the open end of the lid fits over the tapered end of the case to close the container; the lid also has a decorative groove just above the open end
