The hydrometer (a) is a long hollow tube of clear glass that is rounded at both ends; the bottom, which is much larger in diameter, contains lead beads and a red indicator fluid; the top stem, which tapers to a very narrow tube, is marked in graduated increments of 5, from -30 to +50; the wooden hydrometer case (b) is a long, hollow wooden tube that has one open end and one flat closed end; the open end has a slightly smaller diameter to allow a lid to close over the open end once the hydrometer is placed inside; the interior of the wooden case is line with cotton batting to protect the instrument; the case lid (c) is a shorter hollow wooden tube that also has one open end and one flat closed end; the open end fits over the tapered opening of the wooden case which closes the container; the inside top of the lid is also lined with cotton to protect the hydrometer
