Brinckerhoff rectal speculum, which consists of a two-piece metal instrument; the speculum (a) consists of a length of hollow, cylindrical tubing with a closed slightly-tapered tip and an open round end that has a rounded lip surrounding it; the top of the tube is open and has slots at the sides to allow a slide (b) to be inserted; the bottom of the end of the speculum has an attached handle; the handle is made of a flat piece of metal with rounded sides and a rounded end; the handle curves downwards and away from the tip; the upper edge of the end of the handle has vertical gripping grooves stamped into the metal; the slide consists of a piece of metal with a slightly convex rectangular top piece that fits into the open area of the speculum to create a tube; there is a flat handle attached to the slide; the handle curves upwards and has a rounded end; the end of the handle has horizontal gripping grooves stamped into the top edge

(a) The inside edge of the end of the handle has the number "1" stamped into the metal; (b) the bottom of the slide's handle has the words, "SAUNDERS LIMITED // CHROME PLATED // 1" stamped into the metal as well as the Jetter & Scheerer logo of a snake twisted around a caduceus rod with a crown above it; the inner side of the slide has the words "MADE IN GERMANY" stamped into the metal

Condition Remarks
The metal shows minor wear, but the chrome is complete and unstained; no corrosion is visible; the two parts arrived taped together with masking tape, which was removed
