Ophthalmic operating case, which consists of several ophthalmic instruments housed in a case; the case (a) consists of a rectangular-shaped box that has a lid hinged onto the bottom of the back and a sliding clasp at the front; the inside of both the top and bottom have wooden inserts set in, which hold specific instruments securely in place; there are places for 17 instruments in the top of the case (three are missing); the top left corner of the case has a pair of Desmarres entropium forceps (c); below the entropium forceps are two pairs of iris scissors (d,e); below the scissors is a pair of De Wecker's iris scissors; the lower right corner of the lid houses an Anel's lachrymal syringe (g) and three tips (h-j); the upper left corner of the lid houses a test drum (k); this consists of a short, hollow cylindrical length of bakelite that has a metal ring of slightly larger diameter that fits over top; below the test drum are two pairs of iris forceps (l,m); below the iris forceps is a pair of Erhardt's lid forceps; below the lid forceps is a pair of Lambert's entropium forceps (o); the lower left corner of the lid houses a pair of Graefe's fixation forceps, with spring catch (p); the right and central part of the case bottom holds 20 instruments (q-jj); all of these instruments (with the exception of [ff]) have four-sided handles that taper at the end to a smooth, rounded area and taper also at the tip to join with the instrument tip; to the right of the eye instrument section and at the left side of the case bottom is a rectangular area that houses an Elliott's corneal trephine with blades in a box (kk-oo); the lower right corner of the case bottom houses a Mueller's sac retractor (pp); above the sac retractor, in the upper right corner of the case bottom is a Weeks eye speculum (qq); to the left of the eye speculum is a packet of corneal needles (rr); the packet consists of printed paper glued into a rectangular envelope with closed bottom and sides and an open top with a triangular-shaped flap; the flap folds over the opening and tucks into a slit in the front of the envelope; the envelope contains another piece of paper that has been folded to hold 13 corneal needles (not numbered); the needles vary in size, but all consist of a short curved length of metal with a sharp, pointed tip and a small elongated eye at the other end; in the top section of the case bottom (above the row of instruments) is an ivory rule; this rule is made of a single flat piece of narrow rectangular ivory that has a slightly bevelled upper edge on one side; the ruler has stained increment lines and numbers etched into the ivory to measure mm and lignes on one side and inches on the other.
