Cleanse the arm with soap and water, and dry // with a clean towel. // 2. Do not use antiseptics. // 3. Use aseptic instruments only, for scarification. // Some expert vaccinators prefer to use the point itself // as a scarificator. Scarify until serum exudes freely. It // is preferable not to draw blood, although a little // will do no harm. // 4. Break the glass case at the ring, taking care // not to break the ivory point. (The tube will break // readily at the ring if subjected to a bending strain, // rotatiing if necessary.) Remove the ivory point from // the case, but do not touch the part covered with // vaccine with the fingers, or allow it to come in con - // tact with anything whatever except teh site of in - // oculation. Rub the vaccine well into the scarified // area. Prick or scratch this area with the point, then // rub the vaccine in thoroughly again. (The success of the operation will ususally depend on the thorugh - // ness with which the vaccine is rubbed into the // scarification.) // 5. Allow time for the virus to dry before the // clothing is replaced. // 6. The umbilicated vesicle, which is the sole // proof of successful vaccination, should appear from // the seventh to the fourteenth day // PARKE, DAVIS & CO. // LABORATORIES: DETROIT, MICH., U.S.A.; WALKERVILLE, ONT., // CAN.; HOUNSLOW, ENG. // BRANCH HOUSES: [15 other cities listed]";
(f) "VACCINE (GLYCERINATED) // IN TUBES // WITH NEEDLE FOR SCARIFYING // LICENCE No. 1 // ISSUED TO PARKE, DAVIS & CO., BY THE SECRETARY // OF THE TREASURY, U.S.A. // Under provision of Act approved July 1, 1902. // The Purity of the Vaccine is assured by the most rigid aseptic and antiseptic // measures in it preparation and by most searching tests, both bacteriological and // physiological, of the finished product. // The Activity of the Vaccine is determiend by vaccinating a certain number of // cattle and a certain number of children with samples from each lot prepared. // DIRECTIONS: // Cleanse teh site of inoculation with soap and water, and carefully dry. // Take the small rubber bulb in the left hand, with the neck of the bulb pointing to // the right. One of the sealed glass tubes held in the right hand is inserted into the // opening in the neck or cup-shaped end of the bulb, and with a slightly rotary motion, // pushed through until the bulb is impaled and resting at about the centre of the tube. // The end of the tube to the left is then broken off and the tube drawn back until its open // end is well within the cavity of the bulb. Now break off the other (right) end of the tube, and lay the tube aside until the site is scarified. // Scarify a single small area with the needle or with almost any sterile instrument. // To force vaccine out of the tube, close air-hole with finger and apply pressure. // The vaccine should then be rubbed in thoroughly with the scarifying instrument, // with an occasional slight scratching or pricking with the point, in order to facilitate // penetration and absorption. Let the lymph dry before the clothing is replaced. // No dressing is required except in cases where rough or dirty undergarments are // worn, and then a piece of clean, soft linen or cotton is the most suitable. One of our // celluloid vaccination shields may take the place of the linen dressing, but should not be // allowed to remain on the arm continously for more than thenty-four hours, then it may // be removed, cleansed and replaced. // Don't accept the word of the patient or parent as to the success or failure of the // process. Examine the case yourself, and if you find a typical vesicle assure the patient // that he is protected against smallpox. // Don't be in a hurry about passing judgement upon a "take". Sometimes the // vesicles are delayed in their developement. // Keep this product at as uniform temperature as possible, preferably between // 40' and 60' F // After the date stamped on package, return unused vaccine for free exchange. // PARKE, DAVIS & COMPANY. // LABORATORIES: // DETROIT, MICH., U.S.A.; WALKERVILLE, ONT., CAN.; HOUNSLOW, ENG. // BRANCH HOUSES: // [15 cities listed]"
