The esophageal bougie consists of a handle and rod (a), handle cap (b), and five metal olive-shaped tips of different sizes (c-g); the bougie handle and rod has a cylindrical metal hollow handle; the bottom of the handle is threaded to accomodate the handle cap; the bougie tips fit inside the handle; the top of the handle has gripping lines stamped into the metal around the rim; the handle tapers to form a funnel shape and leads to a thin, flat rod; at the end of the rod there is a small bell-shaped metal piece with a short, round, solid threaded metal rod extending from it; this metal rod attaches to the bougie tips; the handle cap screws onto the bottom end of the bougie handle and rod; it is a circular, flat metal cup, with gripping lines stamped around the flat disc-like surface; a smooth metal lip precedes the opening; there are metal threads running along the inner vertical surface; the inner bottom is flat; the bougie tips are all metal and olive-shaped; they each have a round threaded hole in the centre of the wider, rounded end; they attach to the rod end of the bougie handle and rod, and can be stored in the hollow handle; they range in size from large to small.

Metal surfaces are showing slight signs of wear; one large patch of greenish-grey corrosion has developed on the bougie handle (a); it is 2.5 cm long and 1 cm high; smaller patches extend from the larger patch; small patches of wear are also on the rod and on the largest bougie tip (c); no dents or major damage.
