Ohio anesthesia absorber, which consists of a double-chambered hollow plastic cylindrical central section with metal top and bottom pieces and heavy wire protectors running around the plastic chambers; the bottom of the absorber has a round metal base with a metal bar across the diameter and a central adjustable knob that allows the absorber to be fixed onto an anesthesia machine; the top of the absorber is a round metal attachment with a round, central plastic-covered dial; at the front of the top, there are two valves with clear plastic bubble tops and round, open ends; the valve on the proper left has a relief valve exhaust at the top and a piece at the bottom that splits into two open cylindrical pieces; the bottom opening of this valve extension is fitted with a rubber cylindrical covering; there is a metal and rubber cylindrical tube at the back of the absorber, running from top to bottom; a partially torn orange and white sticker is on the top of this tubing; there is a movable metal arm, with a metal cylinder, extending down from its end, attached to the top surface of the back of the absorber's top; inside the top canister, there is a folded piece of paper with product information printed on it.
There is a folded piece of paper with product information printed in black ink in the upper canister (see attached photocopy); instructions printed in black ink on top of the absorber read, "U.S. PAT. 3,083,810 // Ohio® // ANESTHESIA // ABSORBER // MODEL NUMBER"; and imprinted into the metal, "21DC", beneath which, the following appears in black ink: "INSTRUCTIONS // OUT // [reverse triangle] // Change line within 4 hours use after // color change begins in lower canister. // 1. Loosen hand screw to lower base and canister. // 2. Remove both canisters and empty upper canister only. // 3. Refill with 4–8 ni. moisture lime, screening out fines and dust. // 4. Rap canister to settle lime and rake top of lime level with rim. // 5. Center refilled canister in base, and second canister over first. // 6. Tighten handscrew to compress lime and seal absorber. // 7. Open draincock and empty water from base. Rebreather valve (if so equipped) is closed. // SAFETY PRECAUTIONS"; the centre plastic-covered dial in the middle of the top of the machine has semicircular graduation lines, and the numbers, "-10 // 0 // 10 // 20 // 30 // 40 // 50 // 60 // 70" running along the outside of the scale, and the numbers, "-20 // -10 // 0 // 10 // 20 // 30 // 40 // 50 // 60 // 70 // 80 // 90 // 100" along the inside of the scale; underneath the numbers at the midpoint of the semicircle: "CENTIMETERS OF WATER" is printed, and between the open ends of the graduated scale it reads, "Ohio® // VAC. // PRESS. // Marshall // [black circle with a white arrow inside pointing up to the right] town // 88506"; on the top rim of the proper right side of the absorber, a black and white sticker reads, "REBREATHING VALVE // [long, right-pointing arrow] // INSPIRATORY CO2 ["2" subscripted] INCREASED // WHEN RED BAND VISIBLE."; on the valve on the proper left, a red and white sticker reads, "WARNING - EXPLOSION HAZARD - WARNING . // DO NOT EXHAUST FLAMMABLE // AGENTS INTO VACUUM SYSTEM"; a black label on this valve reads, "SET TO LOWEST // PRESSURE WHEN // NOT IN USE TO // PROLONG LIFE // OF DIAPHRAGM"; an orange and white sticker at the top of the rubber tubing reads, "Ohio medical Prod // U L [enclosed in circle; "L" subscripted under "U"] ® // LISTED// ELEC // TUBING // H A"; four black and clear stickers on the sides of the canister read, "DO NOT AUTOCLAVE // Autoclaving will distort the canisters."; a black and white sticker on the bottom rim of the absorber reads, "DRAINCOCK // [down-pointing arrow] // SCREW DOWN TO OPEN // SCREW UP TO CLOSE"; on the proper left valve, there is also a black printed metal plate that reads, "Ohio Medical Products // A DIVISION OF AIRCO, INC. MADISON. WIS. 53707 // AIRCO®"; underneath the metal-stamped figures, "BBFF04115"; near one round opening of this valve, a black and white sticker reads, "RELIEF VALVE EXHAUST"; underneath this opening, near the bottom opening, two arrows pointing towards the absorber are stamped into the metal; on the opposite valve in the same location, two arrows pointing outwards from the absorber are stamped into the metal.

Condition Remarks
The majority of the metal and plastic components are in very good condition; all rubber parts are deteriorating (however, these were not original parts of the artifact); there are cracks in the tubing and canister seals, and there is a strong "rubber smell"; there are a few minor scratches on the outside of the plastic canisters; all parts move freely; on the metal rim of the bottom of the canister, there is a sticky deposit, probably adhesive.
