Display caption reads: "HUA T'OH (c 141-208 A.D.). The most celebrated Chinese surgeon. He was credited with many remarkable operations, opening the abdominal wall to excise diseased organs and employing anaesthetic powders. But he fell foul of the emperor Wei and died in prison; and only one of his surgical techniques survived--the technique for castration, used to supply the emperor's harems with attendants until the twentieth century."
