Mahogany brass-bound case that closes with two slide catches is lined with green velvet; a removable green velvet-covered partition in the case lid has an oval paper label with manufacturer's information; another removable velvet covered tray sits over the bottom portion; blank brass plate is recessed in case lid; contains various amputation instruments useful in the military field; wood handles are cross hatched ebony while the trephione handle is a polished wood; a couple iof items are ivory; contents: (a) Satterlee's capital saw; (b) Galt's trephine; (c) trephine handle; (d) ?; (e) Hey's skull saw; (f) Petit's spiral tourniquet; (g) metacarpal saw; (h) trepanning elevator; (i,j) exploring needle in an ivory case; (k) Liston's small amputating knife; (l,m) medium amputating knife; (n) long catlin; (o) long curved forceps; (p) skein of silk suture thread; (q) packet 1/2 curved surgical needles; (r) quill; (s,t,u) box, tray, and partition.

a) Saw: blade has minor discolouration along the toothed edge and slight rust in the teeth for the first 5.0 cm; (c) Has singe marks around the shaft; (f) the strap is stained; (l,m) blade is loose from handle; many instruments are missing: 6 scalpels/knives, bone forceps, artery forceps, and scissors.

This mid 19th century surgical set is made by arguably the best known surgical instrument maker of American surgical instruments of the 1800s, George Tiemann. George Tiemann: New York, 1826-1900; George Tiemann, Tiemann, Tiemann & Co.. Tiemann was one of the major suppliers of surgical sets and instruments during the American Civil War.
This artefact is part of a set of surgical instruments belonging to Dr. Weston L. Herriman, who was one of the first nine students who graduated in 1855 from the newly formed School of Medicine at the Church of Scotland-affiliated University of Queen's College (1854, Kingston, Ont.). The nine senior students had transferred from the Anglican Upper Canada School of Medicine (Toronto) to the new school at Queen's.
